Rangers fans have expressed their delight on social media after the club confirmed the signing of John Lundstram.

The Gers have been linked with the 27-year-old midfielder on and off for almost a year and now they finally have their man.

The former England youth international will now have plenty of time to get up to speed before the 2021/22 season gets underway and Steven Gerrard thinks the signing significantly improves his options in the middle of the park.

“John is a player I have known for some time and I knew he would enhance our squad,” he said [Rangers.co.uk]. “Having played in the Premier League, he has the undoubted quality to enhance our midfield with his technical ability and physicality and I was impressed with his attitude and ambition when we spoke over recent weeks. John is a winner and knows what is required to succeed at a club of this stature.”

“He will add steel and presence to our midfield along with his quality which makes our squad much stronger, and to procure a player of John’s profile and experience is very pleasing.

“Myself and the staff are looking forward to working with John. We know he is also very excited to get started at Rangers.”

Gerrard and Lundstram aren’t the only ones excited about the deal, either.

Supporters have been crying out for a new addition in midfield with the squad looking thin in that area following Bongani Zungu’s return to Amiens, while Ryan Jack’s injury problems in recent seasons mean it can’t be guaranteed that he’ll be consistently available.

Therefore, the signing of a player in the prime of his career, with extensive recent Premier League experience, on a free, has gone down extremely well.

Here’s a selection of reactions from Twitter:

In more transfer news, a 20-year-old recently released by the Gers is reportedly on the verge of joining an EFL Championship club.
