The rise on analytics in football over the last decade has changed the game drastically with all sorts of new metrics driving teams forward – but Rangers fans on Twitter have been left buckled after Celtic fans claimed one metric (xPoints) has them top of the Premiership table.

While Gio van Bronckhorst’s side sit six points clear of their title rivals going into the final games before the winter break, it looks as though winning actual points in games may prove fruitless.

Whatever you think about the use of data in football now, sometimes it can distort the reality of what is going on and while it definitely has a place, nonsense like xPoints is about as much use as a ticket to Celtic’s ten in a row title party.

Rangers could go into the winter break as many as nine points clear of their nearest rivals and, despite the ‘stats’ saying otherwise, there is no doubt over who is top of the Premiership at the halfway point.
