Rangers player ratings as Ibrox talisman gets 8/10 in 3-0 win over Livingston

Rangers kicked off their Premiership title defence earlier this afternoon, picking up a 3-0 win over Livingston and setting a new club record for consecutive home league wins with 20.

The Light Blues opened the scoring through Ianis Hagi after 8 minutes, although the Romanian later limped off injured, before late strikes from Scott Wright and Kemar Roofe sealed a comfortable three points.

With a Champions League qualifier on Tuesday, Gerrard’s selection was missing one or two of the expected names such as Allan McGregor and Borna Barisic but there was still plenty of quality on display for Steven Gerrard’s side.

There were also competitive debuts for Fashion Sakala and John Lundstram as the duo kicked off their Rangers careers with three points and a clean sheet.

Here’s how we rated Steven Gerrard’s Rangers stars as they kicked off the defence of their Scottish Premiership title against Livingston this afternoon:

Jon McLaughlin – 6

The goalkeeper was  a surprise starter after his omission from the Champions League squad to face Malmo, and had little to do as Livi spent much of the game camped in their own half.

James Tavernier – 8

Skipper had an early chance to open the scoring as the Gers looked to get ahead quickly and was, unsurprisingly, one of Rangers’ biggest attacking threats throughout.

Connor Goldson – 7

Goldson played every minute of every game last season and picked up where he left off as he constantly won his duels and started attacks from the back. Just need to get a new contract sorted now.

Leon Balogun – 7

In the side ahead of Fil Helander against Livingston and the Nigerian international strolled though the game without ever really being tested.

Calvin Bassey – 7

Unexpected place in the starting XI for Rangers and put in an impressive shift as he caused problems down the left but was let down by his decision-making in the final third at times. Big part in the third goal and a decent afternoon’s work from him.

Steven Davis – 8

Veteran midfielder got better as the game went on as Rangers pushed for a second then third goal. Uncharacteristically gave the ball away a few times but quickly regained it and covered a huge amount of ground over the 90 minutes.

Glen Kamara – 7

The Finnish star dictated the tempo in midfield and denied Livi any room to try get forward. Such an important player to how Rangers operate.

Joe Aribo – 6

Rarely seen in pre-season but took his place in midfield as Gerrard’s side got things started with a decent performance but looked a little bit rusty before being replaced by John Lundstram shortly after the hour mark for the former Sheffield United star’s competitive Rangers debut.

Ianis Hagi – 7

Scored the opener after seven minutes and the Romanian international made a bright start before a woeful challenge by Adam Lewis forced him off through injury 31 minutes in, Scott Wright coming on to replace him.

Ryan Kent – 7

Really bright start to the season from the fan favourite and looked a real threat going forward, faded out of the game a little bit and could probably have offered a bit more in the final third as the Gers tried to get a second.

Fashion Sakala – 6

Competitive debut for the Zambian international but he struggled to get involved despite making himself available for his teammates. Replaced by Kemar Roofe for the final 20 minutes.
