SPFL boss makes transfer claim about in-demand Rangers international

Dundee manager James McPake has admitted that he would have played Glen Kamara every week for the Dens Park side rather than sell him to Rangers for £50,000 after the midfielder put in a fantastic performance against Hibs last night.

McPake has just signed winger Paul McMullan on loan from rivals Dundee United [Twitter] after he was frozen out at Tannadice ahead of a summer move to Dundee – with the move reminiscent of the circumstances that brought around Kamara’s arrival two years ago.

Kamara was pushed out of the side by Jim McIntyre when he made clear he would be leaving Dundee, signing a pre-contract with Rangers before making the move later that month after the two clubs agreed the now-famous £50k deal.

Since moving to Ibrox, Kamara has taken his game to the next level and is one of the most consistent players in Steven Gerrard’s side and reportedly attracting interest from clubs across Europe.

McPake was reserve coach at Dundee when Kamara was sold, taking interim charge of the final game that season after they were relegated from the Premiership and insists he would’ve had the Finn in the starting XI every week.

“It’s a tough one,” McPake said. “When someone signs a pre-contract then you know they’re going to be looking elsewhere and have an eye on where they’ll be going in the summer.  Glen Kamara, for example. Glen would’ve played for me every week even though he’d signed a pre-contract with Rangers. Why? Because he was the best player at the club.

“I think it comes down to the manager’s preference and what he wants to do. Some might decide that as soon as you sign for another club then that’s it. That’s not the way I’d look at it but again its never happened to me. Maybe that’s one for when one of my players does sign a pre-contract. If one of them does, maybe I can reassess that but the only ones I can really reference are myself and Glen Kamara.

“I’d signed a pre-contract for Coventry and still played for Livingston and gave everything and wasn’t worried about getting injured and when Glen Kamara signed a pre-contract for Rangers, I would have played him every week.”
