Rangers Sporting Director has praised Ibrox star Calvin Bassey and revealed that Gers boss Steven Gerrard “loves” the 20-year-0ld defender.
Bassey has made a big impression on fans after his arrival from Leicester City over the summer and it appears that he’s made a similar impact on the senior staff at Ibrox with his positive outlook.
The full-back could find himself thrown into the side after concerns over Borna Barisic and Wilson thinks that Bassey is very appreciative of the opportunity he has at Rangers.
“We’re delighted with Calvin, Steven and I were discussing him the other day, we love his personality first and foremost,” Wilson said.
“He’s in here with a smile on his face every day. He loves being here. He loves the opportunity that’s been afforded to him at Rangers.
“There’s a lot of talent out there and the key for us is that our scouting network can identify these opportunities.
“I mentioned it has to align with the squad plan. In the summer we were looking to change the make-up of our full-back positions and Calvin ticked that box.
“There are lots of players like that and we need to make sure our scouts know them strongly but there’s no point anyone coming here if Steven isn’t 100% behind them.”
Despite being a virtual unknown when he signed for Rangers, Bassey has quickly impressed the Light Blues support in his handful of appearances and is emerging as a shrewd piece of business at left-back.
If he does need to step in for Barisic over the next few weeks, there’s little doubt the big defender will put in a string of noteworthy performances and show exactly why Gerrard brought him to Scotland.
