Former Celtic defender John Hughes has told how Rangers star Scott Arfield “raves” about Steven Gerrard‘s training methods as the Liverpool icon impresses at Ibrox.

Gerrard is still only 18 months into his first job in management and has done a remarkable job at Rangers so far, guiding the Gers to the last 32 of the Europa League and their first wins over Celtic – both home and away – in almost a decade.

“I have spoken to Scotty Arfield a few times and asked him about Steven’s training and things, and he raves about it,” Hughes told the Glasgow Times.

“Steven has a level and he is trying to drag his players up there with him.

“He won’t settle for second best, or just reaching Europe, every week he wants them at it. He has set a standard and the players are trying to reach that.”

Given Gerrard’s playing history, it isn’t a surprise that he has high standards and “won’t settle for second best.”

Since taking over at Ibrox, Gerrard has led a remarkable turnaround at Rangers and, hopefully, he can guide the Light Blues to silverware this season.

Having someone who is dragging the standards up is what was needed for a long time and Rangers should reap the rewards for years to come.
