Rangers will have to pay £4million if they want to sign Preston North End midfielder Daniel Johnson, according to a report.

The Daily Record claim that Steven Gerrard’s side will need to cough up the sum to land the goalscoring midfielder after being hit with a number of injuries.

Previous reports had said that the Gers had offered £2million for his services however that looks to be nowhere near enough to convince Preston to let him move on.

With Johnson out of contract next summer, £4million seems particularly steep for someone the Gers can open negotiations with over a Bosman move in a little over three months time.

Preston boss Alex Neil left him out of the side at the weekend for the defeat by Swansea but he could return to action in the EFL cup when PNE take on Derby County tonight.

Johnson had an outstanding 2019/20 Championship campaign, scoring 12 goals and registering seven assists and that is the sort of numbers Gerrard’s side have lacked from midfield in recent seasons.

There are still three weeks left in the transfer window but with Gerrard pushing Rangers to ‘accelerate’ their transfer business, any signing is likely to happen long before the deadline.
