Rangers may now have a chance to sign James McArthur – but the window for his dream Ibrox move may be closed.

The Gers are seeking midfield reinforcements this summer and McArthur has now become available.

Crystal Palace have today confirmed that McArthur is leaving the club at the end of his contract this summer.

McArthur has given nine years of great service to Palace but the time has come for him to move on.

The Scot will be an appealing free agent to many clubs and some will wonder if he could finally join Rangers.

The Daily Mail reported back in 2018 that Rangers were trying to sign McArthur, but the move just never came off.

McArthur is a boyhood Rangers fan with former teammate James McCarthy completely ruling out any notion of him joining Celtic.

McArthur was even part of the Rangers Boys Club and Rangers Supporters’ Club youth team as a kid.

Now available for nothing, McArthur will be discussed by Rangers fans – but we can’t see a move to Ibrox.

James McArthur to Rangers window surely closed

Rangers fans love players who wear their hearts on their sleeves and McArthur would certainly do that at Ibrox.

However, Mcarthur is now 35 and has played just 28 minutes of league action this season.

Rangers appear to be going in a new direction with their midfield setup.

34-year-old Scott Arfield is being released whilst 38-year-old Steven Davis may have played his finally game for the club.

Rangers are trying to get younger in midfield, hence the January deals for Nicolas Raskin and Todd Cantwell.

Add in an expected deal for Jose Cifuentes and Rangers are adding youth, energy and potential to Michael Beale’s midfield.

Bringing in a 35-year-old just doesn’t seem to be in the Rangers plans right now and McArthur may well miss out on a dream move to Ibrox.
