Rangers star to take on Spain and Germany after international call-up

Rangers star Cedric Itten grabbed his first goals for the club last weekend in the 5-1 rout of Motherwell – and the Swiss star has been rewarded with a place in his country’s squad to face Croatia, Spain and Germany.

Itten joins Liverpool’s in-demand forward Xherdan Shaqiri in the squad and will be hoping to build on his impressive first two caps for his country after scoring three times.

The Switzerland manager, Vladimir Petkovic, is optimistic ahead of the UEFA Nations League games, but admits his side could struggle against some of the best teams on the planet.

“In the next seven days we will be playing against three top-class players in world football and we are looking forward to these games,” Swiss coach Petkovic said.

“We are optimistic, but also realistic. We are in a development process with the long-term goal of EURO 2021. In this process, we want to keep improving and try to assert ourselves against every opponent. ”

Itten could come up against a familiar face while on international duty with Borna Barisic likely to be involved for Croatia after becoming the first-choice left-back for his country since the 2018 World Cup.

The Swiss striker has had a slow start to his Rangers career following his £2.5million from St Gallen earlier in the summer but after grabbing his first goals, hopefully, he can kick on and challenge for a place in the starting XI under Steven Gerrard.

A couple of good performances for his country could well help him find his stride and the challenge of facing teams like Croatia, Spain and Germany will be an excellent test for the 23-year-old.
