Dundee United goal-machine Lawrence Shankland has set his sights on matching Rangers talisman Alfredo Morelos and Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard as he prepares for life in the Premiership next season.
The Scotland international joins Morelos and his Old Firm rival on the four-man shortlist for the Scottish Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year award and views them as his “competition” in the goal-scoring charts next season.
Shankland expects both players to continue their form from 2019/20 into the new season – whenever it actually begins – and is looking forward to the challenge after scoring for fun in the Championship.
“Definitely, as a striker, they will be my competition in terms of going out and trying to score goals,” Shankland said, as quoted by the Daily Record.
“I’m expecting those two players to be up there in the high numbers again next season. It’s another challenge for me.”
Like Morelos, Shankland scored 29 times last season although it remains to be seen if the former Ayr star can cut it in the Premiership.
Links to moves away from Tannadice have never really turned into anything and it wouldn’t be a big surprise if he sticks around in the City of Discovery for another year.
If he does – and shows he can cut it in the Premiership – the long-mooted move to Ibrox for the boyhood Rangers fan could finally become a reality.
