Rangers star faces Euro blow after international finals draw

Rangers star Scott Arfield has learned who he could face in next year’s Concacaf Gold Cup after Canada were drawn into Group B; where they will face USA, Martinique and a yet-to-be-determined Caribbean nation.

The final side in Group B will be one of Haiti, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Bermuda or Barbados who will play in the Preliminary Rounds between 2-6 July next year.

The main tournament runs from July 10 to August 1 so Arfield could see himself missing out on Rangers Champions League qualifiers next season as a result.

The 30th-anniversary edition features four groups of four teams with the top two from each qualifying for the knockout stage, although CONCACAF have yet to confirm who will host the tournament.

Canada were knocked out of the 2019 edition in the quarter-final by Haiti after finishing as runner-up to Mexico in the group stage to book their last-sixteen place.

Arfield’s international boss admits that they will be prioritising the World Cup qualifiers with four games taking place between May 31 and June 15 so it will be a hectic summer.

“We have to prepare and prioritise FIFA World Cup Qualifiers,” Herdman said, “but our players will certainly circle the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup group match against USA because our rivalry was really ignited during Concacaf Nations League in Toronto.”

Rangers could be involved in Champions League qualifiers as early as mid-August if they finish second in the league this season so it seems unlikely Arfield could represent Canada all summer then come back and immediately jump straight into a huge European game.
