Rangers star explains role ex-Celtic boss played in Ibrox move

Rangers star explains Ronny Deila and Claudio Reyna influence on Gers move

Rangers midfielder James Sands has opened up on speaking to former Rangers star Claudio Reyna and ex-Celtic boss Ronny Deila about moving to Scotland before joining the Gers on loan.

The American international has worked with both Deila and Reyna at New York City FC, winning the MLS Cup under Deila last year.

Sands has a couple of appearances under his belt already for the Light Blues and the versatile star admits he was glad to have sought out the advice of the former Old Firm duo ahead of signing for Rangers, saying: “[Ronny] had talked to me a little about what his experience was like at Celtic and told me about league and shared some tips and stuff.

“I talked to Claudio Reyna as well because I know him from my time in New York and those two guys were big influences on my move and I’m happy I talked to them.

“[Ronny] was really good about it. Having won a trophy with him in New York it made things a bit easuer but he was always supportive.”

Sands could retain his place in the starting XI for tomorrow’s trip to Dingwall to face Ross County as Rangers look to continue their push towards 56.

Since arriving in Scotland, Sands has looked steady, if unspectacular, and appears to be setlting in well as his 18-month loan gets underway.

With the return of Ryan Jack from injury, and the likes of Scott Arfield and Steven Davis back in contention, places in midfield will be harder than ever to win at Ibrox.

It will be interesting to see just how Sands can develop and push for a regular starting place – and a potential permanent contract at Rangers.
