Rangers are reported to be on the brink of signing Liverpool winger Sheyi Ojo on loan after the success of Ryan Kent at Ibrox – but signing yet another winger is a baffling move from Steven Gerrard.
The Daily Star have reported that the 21-year-old will sign a new long-term Anfield contract before heading north of the border for the season as he looks to force his way into Jurgen Klopp’s first-team plans.
The Gers already have an abundance of wide men with Jamie Murphy, Daniel Candeias, Eros Grezda, Jake Hastie, Jordan Jones, Scott Arfield, Glenn Middleton and Kyle Lafferty all capable of playing there – not to mention the possibility of a return for Ryan Kent.
Ojo struggled last season on loan with French side Reims and there’s nothing that suggests he would come into the side at Ibrox and make an immediate impact.
Unless there is going to be a mass clear out this summer, adding yet another player in an area of the pitch where Rangers are more than covered for any eventuality doesn’t make sense.
While there’s still a long way to go until the transfer window closes in August, there are areas that need more pressing attention from the Rangers manager.
Getting in at least one new central defender should be high on the list with Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley departing this summer.
If Ojo does arrive at Ibrox, it’ll be interesting to see exactly how Gerrard manages his squad – and what it means for others at the club – but the Gers boss needs to turn his attention to other areas of the side before he ends up with a squad packed to the brim with wide players.
