Rangers set to launch midfielder swoop - report

Rangers are interested in signing Algerian international Haris Belkebla from Brest this summer, according to L’Equipe.

The French publication has claimed that Rangers are planning to make an offer for the 26-year-old midfielder soon but face competition from RC Lens for his signature.

Belkebla joined Brest in 2018 from fellow French side, Tours, and made 20 appearances as the Brittany-based side finished 14th in the curtailed Ligue 1 season.

The Algerian is under contract until June 2022, winning one cap for his country so far but was dropped last summer after being called ahead of Africa Cup of Nations in 2019 – for showing his bum on a live stream.

He was also part of the Algerian side at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, finishing bottom of a group containing Argentina, Honduras and Portugal.

There’s no mention of what Rangers could have to pay to land the midfielder but there will almost certainly be some fee involved given his impressive performances throughout 2019/20.

Steven Gerrard has already signed Calvin Bassey from Leicester City as well as turning loan deals for Jermain Defoe and Ianis Hagi into permanent moves so the Gers boss isn’t taking his time in making moves in the transfer market this summer.

Gerrard said last week that it was “exciting times” to be at Ibrox when quizzed about potential signings and it looks like this could be one he was hinting at.
