Rangers eased to a comfortable 2-0 win over Ross County at Ibrox tonight as they got back to winning ways following Sunday’s defeat by Hearts.
The Gers made three changes from Sunday’s game with Matt Polster, Scott Arfield and Sheyi Ojo coming into the starting XI ahead of Jon Flanagan, Ryan Jack and Joe Aribo.
After missing the first three fixtures of 2020, Alfredo Morelos could only take his place on the bench after picking up a calf injury while suspended.
A stuffy first-half saw Rangers take 41 minutes to finally break the deadlock as Jermain Defoe’s strike fired the Light Blues into a deserved lead.
The Gers doubled there advantage just a minute into the second half after some intelligent play involving Ojo, Defoe and Arfield.
Ojo picked the ball up on the right and after a good run, he played it to Defoe who produces a brilliant flick through to Arfield who had gone beyond the County defence to finish well.
There was real concern for Rangers with just over 30 minutes left when Jermain Defoe had to be stretchered off after pulling up chasing a ball over the top.
Here’s how Steven Gerrard’s side performed against Ross County:
Allan McGregor – 6
Little to do but comfortable when he was called upon.
Matt Polster – 7
The American was handed his first league start since signing 12 months ago and almost scored a freak opener after five minutes. Got forward well and kept everything simple as he looked to cement his place as James Tavernier’s understudy. Good night for the American.
Niko Katic – 6
Struggled at times against Billy McKay early on but handled most things County threw at the Gers defence and grew into the game. Rarely gets flustered and showed great confidence in his ability to play the ball under pressure.
Connor Goldson – 6
Comfortable, if a bit slow, in possession but used his passing to try get the Gers moving forward. Did nothing wrong without ever excelling.
Borna Barisic – 7
The main threat going forward for Rangers in the first half as the Gers looked to the Croatian international to whip balls into the box. Typically solid Barisic performance.
Glen Kamara – 7
Kamara had a few sloppy moments on the ball as he uncharacteristically gave possession away several times but covered every blade of grass and put a real shift in. Got better throughout the game and showed his impressive work-rate.
Steven Davis – 6
Still looking a little off the pace and gave the ball away a few times. Needs to get back to his best quickly with a massive run of games in the coming weeks. Replaced by Jones with 15 minutes left.
Scott Arfield – 8
Added some more energy to the midfield in place of the injured Ryan Jack and got his name on the scoresheet. Excellent run on to Defoe’s intelligent flick showed great awareness from the Canadian skipper. Impressive performance from Arfield over the 90 minutes.
Sheyi Ojo – 8
Started brightly after being a surprise inclusion in the starting XI and put in a decent shift. Drifted out of the game at spells in the first half but looked dangerous when he pushed forward. Massive part in the second goal and can be happy with his first start since facing Feyenoord in the Europa League.
Ryan Kent – 6
Given a more central role as Gerrard looked to bring Defoe into the game more. Had a really good early chance to open the scoring. Replaced by Morelos 25 minutes before the end.
Jermain Defoe – 7
Struggled to get involved before grabbing the opening goal four minutes before the break. With Alfredo Morelos watching on from the bench it was a perfect time to get his 13th league goal of the season. Delightful flick to send Arfield on his way for the second goal. The injury which ended his game will be a real worry for Rangers.
Substitutes: Joe Aribo (5) Replaced Defoe with 30 minutes left. Alfredo Morelos (6) On for Kent after 66 minutes. Had a couple of chances to score. Jordan Jones (5) Replaced Davis for his first game since September.
