Former Liverpool star Markus Babbel believes that Rangers new boy Cedric Itten will thrive under Steven Gerrard at Ibrox and help the Gers topple bitter rivals Celtic.
Babbel worked with Itten as a teenager when he signed on loan from Luzern from Basel, and believes he can only improve working under Gerrard and Gary McAllister.
“Cedric is a top professional and Rangers are a top club for the next step in his career. I was reading the German papers, saw him pictured in the Glasgow Rangers shirt and thought: ‘Wow,'” Babbel told the Daily Record.
“Cedric will be working under fantastic coaches in Stevie G and Gary McAllister. If the players are smart they’ll listen to them.
“Steven and Gary are two legends with so much experience and they can only help their players with their knowledge.
“It’s three years since I worked with Cedric but I watched his recent games and I’m convinced he will adapt to the Scottish Premiership and help Rangers to fight against Celtic.”
Itten has burst to prominence with a fantastic goal return for St. Gallen this season and Gers fans will be hoping that he hits the ground running this weekend.
The Swiss striker is likely to be involved when Gerrard’s side take on St. Mirren at Ibrox this afternoon and he could even be handed a start ahead of Alfredo Morelos.
With the Colombian’s future still in the balance, Itten making a strong start could be absolutely vital for Rangers if they aren’t to lose ground in the title race this early.
