Rangers manager has 'no doubts' talented teen can replace Ibrox talisman

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has “no doubts” that Nathan Patterson can replace James Tavernier as the Gers’ first-choice right-back – but insists fans need to be patient with the 19-year-old.

Patterson signed a new deal yesterday to tie him to his boyhood heroes until the summer of 2024 and fans can’t wait to watch his progress after bursting into the first-team at the start of 2020.

Gerrard hailed Tavernier for going out of his way to help Patterson’s development as he challenged the club’s Academy players to follow the Scotland under-21 star’s pathway to the first-team.

“Nathan is fantastic and there is a lot more to come from him, I have no doubts he can become a regular for this team but we have to be patient with that. James has gone out his way to help and develop him,” Gerrard said [Rangers TV].

“We want to have local Academy players who step up and I want that more than anyone, so the ball is in their court if they sacrifice enough and show they are good enough and willing to work hard enough to be in the first-team.”

Patterson has made four appearances this season as he plays back-up to Tavernier and the teenager will be hoping he can pick up some more minutes towards the end of the season.

With the title close for Gerrard’s side, the Gers boss could decide to take Tavernier out a bit more often once it is secured and give Patterson the opportunity he needs to continue his progression.

Patterson will be hoping for more game time over the coming months and Steven Gerrard has hinted that his team selection at Hibernian on Wednesday night could be impacted by concerns regarding the condition of the Easter Road pitch.
