Rangers legend gives verdict on what could make 'crucial difference' in title race

Rangers legend Craig Moore insists the Gers can only win the title if Steven Gerrard has a squad capable of being stretched and having the quality to make changes without losing quality – and Oz thinks the Light Blues finally have that now.

Moore is no stranger to winning trophies at Ibrox with five titles, four Scottish Cups and three League Cups to his name over two spells as a Rangers player.

The former Gers captain admits that Gerrard can’t just rely on his starting XI and is pleased to see there is now real depth to the Light Blues squad.

“You never win anything in football with eleven players, every manager knows that and it’s about the ability to stretch the squad and making sure you have quality and depth is always a work in progress and we have watched that happen at Rangers in the last few months,” Moore told the Daily Record.

“That can make the crucial difference at Rangers and the players who have come in have done a good job.

“That’s what is most pleasing, it will give the manager a nice headache and he’ll love having that problem in terms of having competition for places in every position.

“That also creates a competitive environment within the squad, hopefully that will be the key for the success which we hope will now follow.”

The likes of Jon McLaughlin, Leon Balogun, Calvin Bassey, Cedric Itten, Kemar Roofe and Bongani Zungu have arrived at the club this summer while Ianis Hagi and Jermain Defoe turned their loans into permanent deals.

That should give the Light Blues far more options beyond Gerrards regular starting XI and allow the Gers boss to really mix things up as he looks to end the club’s long wait for a trophy.
