Rangers midfielder Stevie Kelly has signed a new long-term extension to his Gers contract before heading to join Ross County on loan – and Gers fans are delighted to see the promising star signed up for the future.

Kelly really impressed at Ayr United last season, winning their Young Player of the Year award, and was rewarded with a new deal until 2023 and the chance to go play top-flight football.

Rangers’ sporting director Ross Wilson has been impressed with Kelly’s development while out on loan and wants to see the Scotland under-21 star make the next step in the Highlands.

“Stevie is developing really well and impressing all of us with his progress. He had a really good experience at Ayr United and we thank Ian McCall and Mark Kerr for the confidence shown in him and for aiding his development at Somerset Park,” Wilson told Rangers TV.

“Stevie repaid that faith as Ayr’s young player of the season. In turn we have rewarded him with this new contact which is part of what we will do going forward at Rangers, reward young players when they earn it.

“It was part of our development plan for him to now test himself at Premiership level and Steven Gerrard has made clear to Stevie that we expect him to make a strong impact in the league at Ross County.”

Kelly only missed one game last season for United – sitting out the Challenge defeat to Wrexham – and the chance to play Premiership football for the season should really benefit him.

Gers fans on Twitter were delighted to see him get the chance to shine and hope he can return to Ibrox and push for a first-team place.
