Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor is “up there” with legendary Portuguese shotstopper Vitor Baia and Wolves keeper Rui Patricio, according to McGregor’s former Besiktas team-mate Hugo Almeida.
The Portuguese star played with all three keepers during his career and ranks McGregor alongside the former Barcelona and Porto star as he prepares to face Galatasaray in tomorrow’s Europa League playoff.
Almeida insists McGregor is one of the best he worked with during a career which included spells with Porto, Werder Bremen, Besiktas and AEK Athens and saw him represent Portugal 57 times.
“I loved my season with him and it was a shame I didn’t get to play with him for longer,” Almeida said, speaking to the Scottish Sun.
“I had played against him a few times before, so I knew about his qualities.
“Without a doubt he is one of the best goalkeepers I have worked with. He is a great shot-stopper and he is afraid of nothing. He was brave no matter the situation. That is such an important quality for a goalkeeper.
“I have been lucky enough to play with some brilliant goalkeepers in my time.
“The two best were Vitor Baia and Rui Patricio, who were in the national team with me.
“But Allan is up there with both of them, without a shadow of a doubt.
“He is a brilliant keeper and he is still going strong.”
McGregor seems certain to start tomorrow night after returning to the side for the previous two games.
The veteran shotstopper could end up with an extended contract as a reward for his performances this term and, despite his advancing years, he looks every bit as good as he ever has for Rangers.
