Rangers defender Niko Katic believes his partnership with Connor Goldson at the heart of the Gers defence is better than 12 months ago after the Croatian settled into his new environment.
Katic and Goldson both joined the Gers last summer and formed the first-choice partnership in defence early last season before Katic lost his place to Joe Worrall – and the former Slaven Belupo defender admits Goldson helped him a lot last year.
So far this season, Katic and Goldson have resumed their pairing in defence and the former Croatian under-21 international is confident they are better together than they were last season.
“Last year everything was new for me but now I know everyone and we have a good relationship, almost like family, and I spend almost every day with them,” Katic told Rangers TV.
“Connor has a lot of experience and he helped me a lot last year when I arrived and we played something like 30 times together last season. Now we communicate better and know each other better and what to expect so we’re definitely a better partnership than last year.”
Goldson has been a near-constant feature in the side since arriving from Brighton last summer and he has looked at his best when alongside Katic.
With Filip Helander and George Edmundson also vying for a place in central defence, there is plenty of competition to keep them on their toes.
Some fans have called for Katic to be partnered by Helander for today’s clash with Livingston but it’s clear that Katic has built a strong understanding with Goldson and it might not be worth tinkering with that just yet.
