Rangers icon Colin Stein has insisted that he hopes Ibrox star Alfredo Morelos will stay at the club after being linked with a £15million move to Lille – and admits that he can see a bit of himself in the “hot-headed” Colombian.
Morelos future has been the subject of constant speculation for a long time and the Cup Winners’ Cup-winning legend wants to see El Buffalo stick around at Ibrox for a while longer.
Although Morelos has picked up a reputation for poor discipline, Stein can see similarities with his own career after letting his temper get the better of him on a few notable occasions.
“I hope Alfredo will stay,” Stein told the Rangers’ matchday programme ahead of this afternoon’s clash with Coventry.
“I know his form dipped but on his day he is a terrific striker. He’s a wee bit hot-headed but I can’t talk! I was sent off a few times too in my day. It just happens sometimes and the red mist comes down.
“It would be hypocritical of me to criticise Alfredo for that – I was just as bad sometimes! But when he’s got his head screwed on he’s one of the best strikers in the league.”
Injury to Jermain Defoe means Morelos is almost certain to start this afternoon’s friendly against Coventry and makes it that bit more difficult to sell the Colombian.
Depending on how long Defoe is out for, the Light Blues might need to bring in at least one more quality striker before the window shuts and losing Morelos so close to the season starting would be a huge gamble.
If a huge offer comes in, it might be hard to turn down but until that happens, it looks as though Morelos won’t be going anywhere.
