Rangers romped to a dominant win over Hibs this afternoon at Ibrox in their first home league game of the season and Gers boss Steven Gerrard will be delighted with the way his side performed against a side they’ve struggled against in recent times.

The Rangers boss shuffled his side from the midweek win of FC Midtjylland with a handful of changes to his starting XI and they paid off as Jermain Defoe helped himself to a hat-trick.

Defoe opened the scoring early on as he reacted first to the rebound from Sheyi Ojo’s strike to fire home after nine minutes.

It didn’t take too long for the veteran to extend the lead when he finished off a fantastic move six minutes later to make it 2-0.

Jordan Jones beat two Hibs defenders before finding Ojo and the on-loan Liverpool man’s cut-back was smashed home by Defoe.

Gerrard’s side didn’t ease up after going 2-0 in front and the visitors had Ofir Marciano to thank for keeping the scoreline down before Daryl Horgan fired them a lifeline before the break.

Ten minutes after the restart, Hibs were really up against it when Sean Mackie was dismissed for a second booking.

Defoe finally grabbed his hat-trick with 15 minutes left as he finished Steven Davis’ cross and sealed the three points for Gerrard’s side.

Substitute Alfredo Morelos wasn’t to be outdone though as he got his name on the scoresheet just three minutes later as he fired a rocket into the back of the net and put a real shine on an impressive win

The goals weren’t done there though as Morelos added his second before Ojo rounded the scoring off to make it 6-1.

Here’s how Steven Gerrard’s side performed as they trounced Hibs:

Allan McGregor – 7

Solid afternoon for the keeper as he made his first league appearance of the season. A couple of saves but will have much busier afternoons as the season goes on

James Tavernier – 8

A really impressive shift from the captain again and could have had a goal or two of his own. Looks to be over his early-season blip and putting in the sort of performances we’ve come to expect.

Connor Goldson – 7

Excellent distribution from the former Brighton star and looks to have kicked on after an impressive debut season.

Niko Katic – 7

Croat continues to impress and will really make it hard for Gerrard once Filip Helander is fit. Booked early on but a composed performance at the heart of the defence.

Jon Flanagan – 7

Nothing spectacular but looks to now be the first-choice at left-back. Keeps it simple and clears his lines well. Dealt with Hibs attacks comfortably. Replaced by Halliday.

Ryan Jack – 7

Easy to see why he’s a big favourite of Gerrard’s. Uses the ball so well and always looks to drive others on. Really benefits from playing alongside Davis in the middle of the park for Rangers.

Joe Aribo – 8

Every passing game there’s a little something that makes you realise just how good Aribo can be. Lee Bowyer must wake up in a cold sweat when he thinks he could’ve had him in his midfield still.

Steven Davis – 7

The veteran continues to show his class and ran the show in the middle of the pitch. Such an intelligent player and it’s only a shame he didn’t spend the peak of his career at Ibrox.

Sheyi Ojo – 8

Ojo looked hungrier against Hibs and is going to be an important player this season – even if he is inconsistent. A couple of assists and a late goal topped off an impressive all-round performance

Jordan Jones – 7

Jones is going to be one of those players fans love moaning about yet still get excited when he gets the ball. Really looks to be growing into his role at Rangers and should be a vital player in the coming months.

Jermain Defoe – 9

Scored a hat-trick. As a number 9, that’s the only thing that matters.
