Rangers hero thinks Gerrard should avoid taking 'poisoned chalice' Newcastle role

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd insists Steven Gerrard should steer well clear of being the man to replace Steve Bruce at Newcastle United – calling the role a “poisoned chalice” for whoever replaces the Magpies manager.

Gerrard has been touted as one of the favourites to replace the legendary former Manchester United skipper in the hotseat at St James’ Park but Boyd thinks it will take years to get Newcastle to where they want to be, pointing to Manchester City’s failure to win the Champions League despite spending the GDP of a small country on players.

However, the former Ibrox star believes that is something that won’t be afforded to whoever replaces Bruce, and thinks Gerrard will be well aware of that as speculation over his future continues.

“We all know Gerrard’s dream is to manage Liverpool. Would moving to St James’ Park enhance those chances? I would seriously question that,” Boyd said [Scottish Sun].

“Listen, there is no getting away from the fact these are hugely exciting times for all Newcastle supporters.

“While I think Bruce deserves better, there’s no denying that he’s on borrowed time. But you don’t want to be the man succeeding him. Succeed his successor by all means.

“You don’t want to be the first man in that job under the new regime.

“With the eye-watering sums of money being mentioned and the level of ambition being stated, the new owners and indeed the fans are going to expect instant results.

“Newcastle United are not a quick fix. Things didn’t happen overnight for Manchester City despite the millions of pounds poured into that project.

“They still haven’t won the Champions League.

“But City as a club, both on and off the park, were far more stabilised when the Middle East millions arrived. Newcastle are a fragmented shambles. It is going to take a considerable amount of money and time to get this club to where the owners want it.

“Whoever replaces Bruce won’t be afforded the latter.

“It makes it something of a poisoned chalice for me and Steven will be aware of that too.”
