Rangers fans have slammed talkSPORT pundit Perry Groves for claiming that Steven Gerrard’s current side wouldn’t be able to cope with the Premier League.

Speaking on the station’s ‘Sports Bar’ programme on Wednesday night following Celtic’s Champions League qualifying exit at the hands of FC Midtjylland, the former Arsenal player took aim at Scottish football in general.

Firstly, he suggested that the Hoops were the equivalent of a ‘decent’ EFL League One club, with their defeat to the team who finished second in Denmark last season reflecting poorly on the standard of the Premiership.

Rangers went unbeaten in the league last season and impressed in European competition, with their performances sitting in stark contrast to those produced by Celtic.

However, Groves still isn’t convinced that the Light Blues would be able to cope in the English top flight.

“I think Rangers would probably be one of the top six teams in the Championship,” he said [talkSPORT]. “I think if they went straight into the Premier League they would find the competition and the relentlessness every week very taxing.”

“If they came down here and had a few years, they could absolutely establish themselves in the Premier League. But the standard of the Scottish Premiership is not great.”

It’s a disrespectful claim from Groves, who appears to have forgotten that the Gers went unbeaten to top a Europa League group featuring Benfica, Standard Liege and Lech Poznan last season, having defeated Lincoln Red Imps, Willem II and Galatasary to qualify for the tournament proper.

Gerrard’s men then hammered Royal Antwerp in the Round of 32 before eventually being knocked out by Slavia Prague in the Last 16.

Clearly, the Scottish Premiership doesn’t boast the same level of quality or competition that the Premier League does, but the Gers’ European results show that they would be able to compete.

After all, Leicester City only made it to the Round of 32 and Tottenham joined the Light Blues in being eliminated at the Last 16 stage.

Unsurprisingly, plenty of Bears were unhappy with the pundit’s claim and slammed him on social media.
