Rangers fans have responded on social media after a pre-season friendly against Brighton was confirmed, with Shane Duffy set to return to Ibrox.

The Gers already had four pre-season fixtures in the diary.

Steven Gerrard’s side defeated Partick Thistle 1-0 at Firhill on Monday night to get off to a positive start and clashes against Tranmere Rovers, Arsenal and Blackpool are set to follow.

The club had told fans to expect a further announcement regarding the final week of pre-season, though, and that arrived on Tuesday afternoon.

Rangers confirmed that a fixture against Premier League club Brighton and Hove Albion will take place at Ibrox on Saturday 24th July, kicking off at 5:30pm.

The match should be a good test for the Light Blues just a week out from the start of the 2021/22 Premiership campaign.

The Seagulls have some relatively high-profile players on their books, including Leandro Trossard, Adam Lallana and Danny Welbeck, but Bears are only really interested in a potential Ibrox return for Shane Duffy.

The Republic of Ireland international was a marquee loan signing for the Hoops ahead of last season and he started confidently at Parkhead.

However, after a strong opening few weeks, his form went downhill rapidly, with big errors in both domestic and European competition ultimately costing Celtic points and him his place in the side.

Given that Celtic had invested heavily in Duffy in a bid to keep Rangers at bay, Bears revelled in the Hoops’ defensive struggles when he was in the side and are hoping Brighton boss Graham Potter brings him back to Ibrox later this month.

Here’s a selection of joyous reactions to the friendly announcement from Twitter:

Rangers fans have also expressed their excitement about the signing of John Lundstram, but an EFL club expert has dropped a warning regarding his attitude.
