Rangers fans have responded to a Scottish Sun report which claims that Shane Duffy has returned to Brighton ahead of schedule following a dire loan stint at Celtic.

Duffy joined the Hoops on a season-long loan in September, with the prospect of winning ‘ten-in-a-row’ luring him to Glasgow.

He started off well at both ends of the pitch, scoring in his first two Premiership appearances and contributing to a number of early clean sheets.

His form soon rapidly declined, though, with the Republic of Ireland vice-captain making a series of high-profile errors in domestic and European matches.

Duffy struggled badly in the Old Firm fixtures some had tipped him to dominate and he ultimately found himself out of the starting XI.

The 29-year-old’s final Celtic appearance came against St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park in mid-February and the Scottish Sun reports that he has now been sent back to Brighton early after injury ruled him out of the final two Premiership matchdays.

It’s thought that the deal cost the Hoops around £3m, via an initial loan fee of £2m and £30,000-a-week in wages.

Rangers fans have bid farewell to the centre-back on social media, with some joking that he was in fact a special agent working undercover to help the Gers secure 55.
