Former Rangers star Mikel Arteta has been confirmed as the new Arsenal manager – but Gers fans on Twitter don’t see it working out well for the Gunners legend.
Arteta had been expected to take over from interim boss Freddie Ljungberg following Unai Emery’s sacking and his appointment was confirmed earlier this afternoon.
The Spaniard had been working as Pep Guardiola’s number two at Manchester City and enjoyed a trophy-laden spell at the Etihad but he now swaps one Gulf airline-branded stadium for another as he returns to the Emirates.
Arsenal are currently tenth in the Premier League and appointing the rookie is a massive gamble after Emery’s failure to bring success back to North London.
Arsene Wenger’s shadow still looms large at Arsenal and with Arteta having spent his entire time as a Gunner working under the iconic Frenchman, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him adapt some of his former manager’s methods.
Gers fans were quick to wish the former Ibrox midfielder good luck but there wasn’t much in the way of positivity over his chances of success -with many calling the move a “gamble.”
Here are some of the comments from Rangers fans after Arteta’s appointment:
All the best to former Rangers player Mikel Arteta as Arsenal manager 🇬🇧

I remember a young Mikel Arteta standing on his front steps waiting to get picked up for training not long after he joined Rangers. I was fitting his bedroom carpet. Little did I know I was working for the future Arsenal manager. #Arsenal #WelcomeMikel #WelcomeArteta

Good luck to Mikel Arteta at Arsenal from everyone at @RangersFC. Let’s hope he plans a pre season friendly between Rangers and Arsenal next pre-season!

Watching him play for Rangers I would never have imagined Arteta being Arsenal manager one day.
It’s a brave appointment and a huge club to take over as a rookie but I just can’t see him getting the time to turn that club back into the force they once were. pic.twitter.com/6km4hPK0tl

Arsenal appointing Arteta is a massive gamble, for both him & the club
