Rangers midfielder Stephen Kelly has been named Young Player of the Year by Ayr United fans after an impressive season on loan with the Honest Men – and some Gers fans wants Steven Gerrard to give him a chance in the Ibrox first-team when football finally resumes.
Kelly helped Ayr to a fourth-place finish in the Championship, making 31 appearances and scoring six times, as he looks to gain first-team experience to push for a place in Gerrard’s squad.
The 20-year-old has won rave reviews during his time at Somerset Park and some fans think he would make a good addition to Gerrard’s squad ahead of a renewed push to win the club’s first title since 2011.
He netted his first professional goal during a League Cup fixture against Stranraer in July and quickly became a permanent fixture in midfield.
A change of management didn’t deter his progress as Ian McCall left and was replaced by Mark Kerr and Kelly continued to impress as Ayr maintained their push for a playoff place before the season was ended early.
Rangers fans were delighted for Kelly after his recognition by Ayr – with one boldly predicting he will be Gers captain one day.
