Rangers defender Niko Katic has made himself a big favourite with Gers fans since his arrival from Slaven Belupo last year – and there was dismay among some fans as the Croatian was again missing from the squad to face Porto in the Europa League.

The Gers welcome to Portuguese giants to Ibrox as they look to take a step closer to qualification for the knockout rounds but it was Connor Goldson and Filip Helander who were given the nod in Steven Gerrard’s starting XI.

There wasn’t even a place among the substitutes as George Edmundson and Jon Flanagan are the defensive options available to Gerrard on the bench.

Katic suffered a similar fate last season when he lost his place to Joe Worrall in the starting XI and it looks as though history is repeating itself for the talented defender.

So far this season, he has made 12 appearances for the Gers but has only started once since September as Helander and Goldson appear to be Gerrard’s preferred partnership.

With no place at all in the squad for Katic, fans on Twitter were left unhappy at the defender’s omission – with one asking what Gerrard ‘has against’ the Rangers star.
