Rangers fans have been left in stitches by a ‘phenomenal’ press conference performance from Allan McGregor ahead of Tuesday’s clash against Malmo.

The Gers are taking on the Swedish champions in a Champions League Qualifying Third Round first leg and McGregor is set to return to the team after being rested for Saturday’s Premiership opener against Livingston.

The 39-year-old has a reputation for being laid back and telling it straight during interviews but Monday morning’s effort was on another level.

McGregor looked close to nodding off on several occasions and gave a few unconventional answers.

For example, in response to a foreign reporter asking “what are your thoughts on Malmo and returning back there ten years after the last game”, the keeper said: “I canny remember ten days ago mate, ten years is too long. Someone told me recently that two players got sent off and I actually canny remember. I know we never qualified, that was the big thing!”

Later in the presser, in response to a question about Malmo’s playing style, he spoke about the need for doing due diligence on all opponents before adding: “The internet is mental these days, so you can see all their games, what they do. There are different websites to do that.”

Finally, when asked if he thought the Gers were favourites for the tie, he replied: “I’ve no looked at the bookies’ sites so I couldn’t tell you to be fair.”

His approach may have taken the Swedish reporters in particular by surprise but Rangers fans thought the whole thing was hilarious and want McGregor to be put on media duty more often.

By the time of writing, the video footage of the presser had received over 2k likes as well as hundreds of retweets and replies.

Here’s a selection of reactions from Twitter:

Steven Gerrard was more cooperative during his press conference but he did issue a spiky response to one reporter’s question.
