Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos has been on the receiving end of some seriously questionable treatment from some sections of the media ever since his arrival in Scotland – but the Scottish Sun’s Bill Leckie has taken it to new extremes by branding the Colombian goal-machine a “waster” as he launched a bizarre attack on El Buffalo.

The bitter hack doubled-down on the lazy South American tropes by continually comparing Morelos with Luis Suarez as he straddled the line between bitter rantings and xenophobic bile as the paper’s “Respect Our Players” campaign looks to have died a death,

For some unfathomable reason, Leckie also compared Morelos’ lack of medals in his career with those won by the likes Roy Keane, Graeme Souness and Eric Cantona – conveniently ignoring that Morelos is only 23 and has the bulk of his career ahead of him.

Leckie also couldn’t go a full column without chucking in the most irrelevant stat of them all – Morelos’ lack of goals in Old Firm games.

The bumbling hack ignores Morelos becoming the first player in history to score 14 Europa League goals before Christmas or the fact that he has scored more goals in Europe this season that any other Scottish-based player has managed in a single campaign.

He might not be as genial as Henrik Larsson or have the same sense of humour as Ally McCoist but the Colombian is scoring goals at a rate that makes them look bang average.

That’s not enough for some in the Scottish media though and they simply NEED to find something to criticise Morelos for.

Who cares that he flew halfway across the world in the hours after the last Old Firm game to host a charity game in his hometown in Colombia when there’s a Pablo Escobar joke that can be made?

Obviously, he’s such a waster that he left Colombia for the comparable climes of Finland as a teenager as he looked to make his mark in the game.

Unsurprisingly, Rangers fans on Twitter were fuming with Leckie’s bile – with one calling it “gutter journalism.”
