Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to enjoy one of the club’s finest moments after Derek Parlane’s strike in the 2-0 win over Bayern Munich in the 1972 European Cup Winners Cup the ‘Goal of the Day.’

Fans of a certain vintage still view the triumph as the Gers’ finest performance as they brushed aside what was, largely, the 1974 German World Cup-winning squad.

Franz Beckenbauer, Sepp Maier, Gerd Muller and Uli Hoeness lined up for Bayern at Ibrox as Sandy Jardine opened the scoring before the King of Ibrox Park made it 2-0 and sealed the Gers’ place in the final.

Parlane had only made two appearances for the Light Blues – a 1-1 draw with Clyde and a 2-0 defeat by Dundee – before he marked his name indelibly into the club’s folklore with his goal.

He would go on to make 300 appearances in Light Blue, scoring 111 goals, winning three League titles, three Scottish Cups, three League Cups and was on the bench the night Gers beat Moscow Dynamo in the final.

Fans on Twitter were loving the classic footage, with one supporter calling it th “greatest night” Ibrox has ever witnessed since the Gers moved there ver 120 years ago.
