Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has warned Gers fans that he can’t prioritise winning the league over European progress this season – despite fans being desperate to get their hands on the league trophy.
The Gers haven’t won the title in a decade but Gerrard is adamant European football is every bit as “vital” as domestic success for the club to move forward.
Gerrard’s side have reached the group stage of the Europa League in the last two season and Gerrard insists that they need to do it again this term.
“We all know how important the league is every single year,” Gerrard said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.
“What people need to understand is that, for us, European football is also vital.
“It’s key to Rangers moving forward.
“There’s no possible way I can prioritise in terms of one competition against the other.
“People need to realise, for this club to function in a healthy way, we need to be successful in qualifying for European competitions.”
While the financial side of European football is always a boost, you won’t find many fans who think it is on an even keel with winning the title this season.
After a decade without major silverware – and Celtic closing in on 10(ish) in a row – winning the league is absolutely vital for Rangers this season, particularly with the top two gaining Champions League entry for next season.
Finishing top will see Rangers get an easier pathway to the Champions League groups and make the ‘vital’ qualification that little bit easier.
