Rangers defender George Edmundson has won rave reviews from Ibrox cult hero Hugh Burns after his performance against Hamilton on Sunday – with Burns claiming he made Connor Goldson look a “better player” too.
Edmundson made his first league start since his summer move from Oldham Athletic and left fans impressed after putting in a fantastic afternoon’s work in the 5-0 win.
Burns called Edmundson’s showing “magnificent” and insisted it was “one of the finest performances” as he hailed the Englishman.
“I witnessed, probably, one of the finest performances,” Burns told Rock Sport Radio.
“OK, as you say, you can only play who’s in front of you. I’ve seen the big centre-back [George Edmundson] playing a full game for the first time. He was magnificent.
“What he did, he did well. He was crisp with his passing, his headers were good, even Goldson looked a better player, playing with a better player.”
Edmundson is the one out of the four central defenders in Gerrard’s squad who has been left to quietly get on with things without much hype or attention.
When he has played, he’s yet to put a foot wrong and it’s really starting to look as though the Gers have landed a real gem in the former Oldham star.
Whether he can retain his place in the short-term with Filip Helander and Niko Katic also competing to partner Goldson remains to be seen but he could well go on and be a crucial player for Rangers for years to come.
