Rangers star Jermain Defoe is confident that Alfredo Morelos will repeat last season’s goalscoring exploits and insists that the Colombian is a “fantastic player” after his blistering start to the season.

Morelos bullied the Feyenoord defence in the Europa League before following that up with a similar showing against St. Johnstone on Sunday, opening the scoring in the 4-0 win at Perth.

Defoe thinks that Morelos’ strength helps him roll defenders who get too close, and the veteran Englishman thinks that is when the 23-year-old is at his best.

“He is a fantastic player and when he plays he is going to score goals, like he showed last season. He will do the same this year,” Defoe said, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“He is so strong and when defenders get that tight to him that is when he is at his best, when he can roll people.

“His link-up was good, he kept the ball every time. You need that, because you’ve got Connor (Goldson) screaming at you! He was good.”

Morelos has scored 12 times in 15 games this season after hitting the net 30 times over the course of last season so the former HJK Helsink man has made an even better start to the campaign than 12 months ago.

Defoe has been no slouch either, with his double at McDiarmid Park taking his Rangers tally to eight goals in twelve for the season.

The on-loan Bournemouth striker seems to be having a really good impression on Morelos after the Colombian’s discipline issues last season saw him pick up a number of red cards – and hopefully it can continue for a long time to come.
