Rangers star Filip Helander was powerless to help Sweden avoid falling to defeat to World Champions France last night, remaining on the bench throughout the 1-0 loss.
Kylian Mbappé’s strike four minutes before the break was the only goal as France kicked off their Nations League campaign with three points.
The PSG star cut in from the left flank, making his way past three defenders before firing home at the near post.
Barcelona star Antoinne Griezmann missed an injury-time penalty to double France’s lead, which leaves them behind Portugal after they beat Borna Barisic’s Croatia 4-1.
Sweden face Portugal on Tuesday and Helander will be hoping to get some minutes on the pitch after an impressive start to the season for Rangers.
Helander returned to the side last month after being sidelined by injury since December and has looked assured as Steven Gerrard’s side have recorded shut-outs in all six league games to begin the campaign.
The 27-year-old has 11 caps for his country and has been praised by Gers fans since his return to action and the battle between Helander and Leon Balogun to partner Connor Goldson in defence.
