Rangers defender could make return from injury v St Mirren GvB confirms

Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has no new fresh injury concerns ahead of Sunday’s Premiership clash with St Mirren as he confirmed Leon Balogun could return for the Boxing Day fixture.

The Light Blues have been without a number of key players recently as injuries have taken their toll but van Bronckhorst is also hopeful that Filip Helander will be able to return after the winter break.

The Swede has been a huge miss this season so far and his return comes as Rangers could potentially be without Nigerian internationals Balogun and Calvin Bassey and further stretching his options in defence.

“Filip (Helander) has been back individually for a couple of weeks and hopefully after the break, he can join up with the group for training sessions,” Gio said.

“Leon (Balogun) will join in the session today and we will see if he is fit for Sunday, no fresh injury concerns.”

Sunday’s clash with St Mirren is a great chance for Rangers to get a good win ahead of the break and possibly freshen the side up a little and give more minutes to the likes of Nathan Patterson.

The Buddies haven’t exactly had an easy time of it lately as Covid ravages their squad but their impressive draw with Celtic in midweek shows they can’t be underestimated.

Rangers are still without the likes of Ryan Jack and Kemar Roofe as they look to maintain their six-point lead at the top of the Premiership table.

However, the Gers have just quietly gone about their business and kept getting results despite van Bronckhorst having had nowhere near his full-strength squad available since taking the reins last month.

Meanwhile, before taking any transfers into account Rangers could have up to six players ruled out of the rearranged Old Firm derby with Celtic in February.
