Leeds United will move for Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui if Marcelo Bielsa leaves Elland Road, according to a report, suggesting an end to their interest in Rangers boss Steven Gerrard.
According to the Scottish Sun, Lopetegui is top of the Leeds’ hierarchy’s shortlist to replace the Argentine in the hotseat with both named as contenders for this year’s Best FIFA Men’s Coach award.
Gerrard has consistently been named as a potential replacement with the Yorkshire side after a fantastic start to his managerial career with Rangers but it appears that he’s no longer in the running.
That will come as a positive bit of news for Gers fans who have been hugely impressed with the work Gerrard has done to take the Light Blues eleven points clear of bitter rivals Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
Lopetegui has also had stints in charge of Spain and Real Madrid and will compete with Chelsea for top spot in their Champions League group having already secured qualification to the knockout rounds.
Gerrard has also been regularly named as a potential successor to Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool but hopefully, he remains at Ibrox for a while yet and continues the excellent job he’s done so far.
