Rangers boss excited to see summer signing in action for Gers

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard thinks that summer signing Calvin Bassey will “surprise” people once he gets started at Ibrox – calling the young full-back a “fantastic” talent.

Bassey signed for the Gers on a Bosman from Leicester City and Gerrard thinks fans will be “as excited” as he is once they see Bassey in action.

Gerrard admits he doesn’t arrive with the hype that surrounds Ianis Hagi but is looking forward to seeing the defender after the Gers pursued his signature for “some time.”

“I think he’ll surprise a few,” Gerrard told Rangers TV.

“There’s not many who will know his name, like a Hagi for example. We’ve tracked him for some time, we’ve watched him a lot and I think he’s going to come in and surprise a lot of people because he’s a fantastic talent.

“He’s big, he’s strong, he’s quick, he’s aggressive, he’s excellent in one-on-one situations, he can play in two or three different positions, he plays with a smile on his face and he is your modern-day powerful full back. I’m looking forward to see how people take to him because I think when they’ve watched him quite a bit, they’ll be as excited as I am.”

Bassey will likely compete with Borna Barisic at left-back as Gerrard adds some depth to his squad after losing a number of fringe players last month.

Gers fans will hopefully get a chance to see Bassey in action soon with the Gers set to announce pre-season friendlies ahead of the new season starting in August.

Rangers will have to do without him though when they face Bayer Leverkusen in the second leg of the delayed Europa League last 16 clash on August 5/6.
