Rangers boost as decimated Benfica may need to call on B team - report

Rangers Euro rivals Benfica could have to call on players from their B team to make a 23-man squad for their crunch Europa League tie at Ibrox, according to a report in Portugal.

Record claim that Jorge Jesus’ will need to pluck players from the club’s colt team if he’s to be at a full complement for the trip to Ibrox.

This follows the news that the Portuguese giants have eight first-team stars absent for the crunch match at the top of Group D, five of them due to Covid-19 issues.

Uruguayan forward and £21m talent Darwin Nunez has tested positive for the virus along with German international midfielder Julien Weigl in two considerable blows to Benfica.

Talented Benfica midfielder David Tavares and young Belgian keeper Mile Svilar have also tested positive for the virus but are believed to have recovered, albeit not in time for this match.

Former QPR midfielder Adel Taarabt is the latest name to tested positive in the Benfica camp, with the Moroccan ruled out of the tie after start the 3-3 draw between the two sides in Lisbon.

Benfica trio André Almeida, Nuno Tavares, Todibo and Pedrinho are also all injured heading into this match.

On top of that, Greek first-teamer Andreas Samaris is not registered for the Europa League squad due to strict registration rules involving homegrown players.

This means Benfica – who still have plenty of quality available for the trip to Ibrox – may need to promote from within in order to reach a full complement heading into the match.

With the Portuguese side toiling and injuries aplenty, Rangers have a real opportunity to take charge in the group with two games to play.
