When the dust settles on this hectic transfer window (we’re only on the 7th of January), we will probably look back on it as the one where Rangers signed Jermain Defoe. He may even turn out to be Rangers’ best signing of the season. On the pitch at least.

It is highly unlikely Rangers, Celtic or any other side will trump it. In terms of pure reputation and influence alone. Defoe is a big name player. The fans certainly approve.

But is Jermain Rangers’ best signing this season? Even if he scored 20 goals between now and May, I’d still hesitate to say it. The truth is that title goes to the man who made the deal possible, Steven Gerrard.

It might sound like a case of stating the obvious, but I’m going to state it anyway. Jermain Defoe’s relationship with Steven Gerrard made this deal possible.

By signing Steven Gerrard, Rangers kicked their rebuilding job up a gear. Like sacking dodgy contractors mucking up your dream home, we signed the precocious young university graduate who was cocky enough to take the job, in the hope it’d be the making of him.

He’s not completed it yet but he’s certainly went some way to cleaning up the mess.

Gerrard made Defoe deal possible

Gerrard is Rangers biggest signing for a decade. Let alone the season. With notoriety, connections, passion and a clear understanding of the game, it was a superb appointment by King and co. They too should quite rightly take the plaudits.

Without Gerrard at the helm, could Rangers attract the likes of Defoe? Six years ago we were attracting the likes of Kevin Kyle. Last season it was Eddie Herrera.

Bear in mind, Defoe hasn’t kicked a ball yet. And there’s no guarantee he’ll be a revelation. But it’s really hard to imagine otherwise. Even at 36 he’s fit as a fiddle and the prospect of this challenge is something he’ll relish. It’s clearly something Steven Gerrard and Mark Allen have thought about before making their move.

Defoe would be rounding off a stellar career in style at Ibrox if he can achieve the title. Does he need any more motivation?

It is all set up for Defoe to be a top signing for Rangers. But whilst he’s grabbing the headlines just now, the biggest signing Rangers made this footballing year was back in May.

And he hasn’t even kicked a ball for the club.
