Manchester City won’t block former Rangers midfielder Mikel Arteta from a dream return to the Emirates Stadium to take over as manager if Unai Emery is sacked by the Gunners, according to a report.

The Sun claims that City won’t stop Pep Guardiola’s sidekick from heading back to London if Emery is binned after a run of only six wins from his last 19 Premier League games.

The Spaniard enjoyed arguably the best spell of his career at Arsenal after stints with Barcelona, PSG, Rangers, Everton and Real Sociedad and was in the running to replace Arsene Wenger when he retired.

Arsenal instead opted for Emery but the former Sevilla boss has never really looked at home in North London and it now seems to be only a matter of time before he moves on.

Arteta made over 200 appearances for Arsenal over an eight-year spell at the Emirates and still holds a special place for Rangers fans after two fantastic seasons at Ibrox.

 

After joining City in 2016, Arteta has been working alongside his former La Masia colleague Pep Guardiola as an assistant coach but could now be set to step out in his own right and take the reins at Arsenal.
