'Lived my dream' - Former Rangers midfielder announces retirement at age 31

Former Rangers midfielder Jamie Ness has announced his retirement from playing at the age of 31 – insisting he ‘lived [his] dream.’

Ness, who has had numerous long-term battles with injury during his career was most recently with Forfar befoe a serious knee injury ended his season, limiting him to just eight appearances.

“After 14 years it’s time to hang up the boots,” Ness wrote on Instagram.

“I have made a lifetime of memories that will stay with me forever.

“It’s a hell of a rollercoaster being a professional footballer and I’m grateful for every single minute of it.

“I’ve been lucky enough to have worked with some fantastic people and to have played for some fantastic clubs.

“Thank you to my teammates, managers, coaches, fans and everyone who has supported me on this journey.

“Most of all thank you to my family for helping me achieve everything I did, without them it wouldn’t have been possible.

“I have lived my dream and I’m now ready for the next chapter.”

Injuries have taken their toll since stunning Rangers breakthrough

Ness broke into the Rangers side in 2011 with a stunning Old Firm goal at Ibrox but injuries have plagued the midfielder throughout his career.

Ness was tipped to be a mainstay in the Rangers midfield for years to come before leaving the club in 2012 after financial meltdown.

Stints with Stoke City, Plymouth Argyle, Dundee and Forfar saw him try to rediscover the form that saw him quickly become a favourite at Ibrox.

However, it wasn’t to be for Ness and he has now decided to hang up his boots and take the next step in his career.

At only 31, it will be interesting to see what Ness decides to do next and whether he opts to take the leap into coaching.

With former Ibrox Academy teammate Rhys McCabe recently becoming the youngest SPFL boss when he took the reins at Airdrie, Ness could look to follow suit.
