Hearts manager Craig Levein has appeared to pour cold water on reports that Rangers are looking to sign Jambos defender John Souttar, by claiming he’s not sure the defender would want to join the Gers.
Levein didn’t seem impressed when asked about the claims during his press conference earlier today and didn’t appear to think a move would happen.
Souttar is under contract at Tynecastle until 2022 so will cost the Gers a sizeable transfer fee but if Levein’s comments are anything to go by then it doesn’t look likely.
“I’m not sure John would want to go there to be honest,” Levein said, as quoted by the Daily Record.
Souttar has been a standout for Hearts since signing from Dundee United in 2016.
The centre-back has forced his way into the Scotland reckoning and a move to Ibrox this summer would be a shrewd bit of business.
With Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley set to leave Rangers in the summer, there’s a definite need for at least one new defender and Souttar would fit the bill perfectly.
If Rangers don’t land Souttar, Gerrard will need to move quickly to land another defender ahead of the start of the new campaign.
