Legendary manager and former Rangers striker helping Aberdeen in search for new boss

Legendary manager and former Rangers striker Sir Alex Ferguson is assisting Aberdeen in their search for a new boss.

With the Dons fourth in the Premiership and a whopping 39 points behind champions Rangers, they parted company with Derek McInnes – who had been at the helm for eight years – earlier this month.

The Pittodrie club are currently searching for his replacement and chairman Dave Cormack has confirmed that Sir Alex is providing assistance.

The 79-year-old played for the Gers between 1967 and 1969 before going on to become the most successful manager in the history of the game, bringing silverware to St Mirren and Aberdeen before a period of unprecedented success with Manchester United.

“He called me on Friday and reminded me that – in his opinion, and I agree with him – Aberdeen is the hardest club to manage outside of Celtic and Rangers, and the hardest club to be chairman of,” said Cormack [BBC Sport]. “It’s a prestigious position for anyone.”

“He said: ‘Listen, you find a coach that you can work with, someone who can go to Glasgow and aim to beat Celtic and Rangers, don’t look for second best’.

“Sir Alex has made himself available for me to use as a sounding board as we go through this process and you can bet your bottom dollar that I will take him up on that.”

Having Fergie’s wisdom to call upon is a big boost for Cormack but it will take a very special manager to turn the Dons into a team capable of competing with the Old Firm over the course of a season.

Rangers have taken nine points from a possible nine against Aberdeen so far this season, while Celtic, despite all their problems, have defeated them three times in four fixtures in all competitions.

The Gers’ next Premiership fixture is against the Hoops and the officials for the third Old Firm of 2020/21 have been named.
