Ayr United manager Ian McCall has dropped a big hint over prolific striker Lawrence Shankland’s future – and it sounds as though he could be Rangers-bound this summer.

The striker has scored 63 times for Ayr in the last two seasons and looks certain to depart Somerset Park after his contract came to an end on Friday.

McCall admits the striker has three offers on the table with one coming from a Scottish club where players need to be “really mentally strong” to succeed – presumably Rangers or Celtic.

The striker is unlikely to command a first-team place at Ibrox with Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe ahead of him in the pecking order but he would offer some good depth for Gerrard’s squad.

Despite seeming as though he’s been around for years, Shankland is still only 23 and has a big future ahead of him after getting his career back on track at Ayr.

If the Gers have offered him a contract then it would fit in with the profile of other summer signings so far like Jake Hastie and Jordan Jones.

The biggest problem with Rangers potentially signing Shankland though would be how much his development is affected if he isn’t playing every week and only given brief chances to impress.
