Rangers travel to Cowdenbeath on Friday night as the winter break comes to an end and competitive action resumes.
More than be the chance to progress for silverware, this match also presents the opportunity to rotate the squad. And for the 3500 who are making the trip to East Fife, it’s the chance to get a glimpse at a few new signings.
The David v Goliath Scottish Cup tie pits Scottish Premiership chasing Rangers against mid-table League Two side Cowdenbeath.
The last time the two sides clashed was in January two years ago in the Scottish cup. Rangers ran out 5-1 winners at Ibrox, with Martyn Waghorn banging in a hattrick. The last time Rangers played Cowdenbeath at Central Park however, the Ibrox giants stumbled to a 0-0 draw.
That’s approaching four years ago in the Scottish Championship. Both sides have had pretty different fortunes since then. Rangers are getting back where they need to be, whilst the Blue Brazil have suffered two relegations.
When Rangers travel up on Friday, I suspect Steven Gerrard will rotate things a little. He could give the whole squad a run-out between Friday’s match and Sunday’s friendly with HJK Helsinki.
Being honest, it’s a difficult line-up to predict, but here’s the XI I’d stick out to face off against Cowdenbeath. Why not give the young boys in and around the squad a run out? There’s a good blend of youth and experience here.
