How many points should Rangers take by the winter break?

With the winter break on the horizon, show me a Rangers fan who says they wouldn’t take our season so far back in May and I’ll show you a liar.

A memorable European run, if not frustratingly short-lived in the end. A more capable, stable squad and backroom staff. Top of the league mid-way through December.

It’s not exactly been a bad season so far. That, to me, is why it’s so exciting there is a feeling there’s still a lot to come.

And I’m not just talking about January signings.

Rangers have massive scope to improve the players that are already at the club. The best, it feels, is yet to come. But what should we expect from the remaining four matches before the winter break?

Head v Heart?

The heart says 12 points – and why not? We’re capable of it with a little self-belief and if certain players step up. But our form has been poor recently, and many won’t hold out hope that that’s going to happen.

Realistically, I think we can be happy with 8 and anything above that is a bonus. In my mind, that’s a draw with Hibs at Easter Road tomorrow, beating St. Johnstone on Sunday, beating Hibs at Ibrox on Boxing Day and drawing with Celtic three days later.

I’m being deliberately conservative here too. Going by the atmosphere amongst the fans yesterday, so is everyone else. There’s no need to get ahead of ourselves in December.

If we can get to January top, what a superb achievement by Steven Gerrard and his team. But with the January transfer window coming up, the most important thing is we are still in a title race.

Eight points over the next four games ensures that.
