Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has warned his squad that there are no favourites at Ibrox and he’ll pick his team based on who “can get the job done” each week.
The Gers boss rejected suggestions that Connor Goldson and Filip Helander would make up his regular centre-back pairing – insisting it was “far from” fair to suggest it.
As his side prepares for today’s friendly with Blackburn, Gerrard insists that being in form will give players a “better chance” of staying in the side.
“It’s not fair to say Filip and Connor will be my first-choice partnership at the back, far from it,” Gerrard said, as quoted by the Daily Record.
“I pick the best 11 players who I think can get the job done and that will change from week to week. I don’t have favourites or stonewallers for the shirt.
People might have a different opinion on that because I pick certain players more than others. If you’re in form it gives you a better chance of keeping the shirt, of course.
“But no one is a shoo-in here any more to start in the first XI, unless they deserve it.”
The Gers boss has a bloated squad to choose from so he isn’t short of options, however, after saying similar last season then promptly dropping in-form Ross McCrorie there might be some who don’t buy what he’s selling.
While he insists that Goldson and Helander won’t be shoo-ins for starting place, it’ll come as no surprise, if by the end of the season, they play 85% of games together.
However, as long as Gerrard gets his side challenging for trophies, few Rangers fans anywhere will care if he has favourites and picks them regularly.
